Ski jacket

A waterproof ski jacket blocks snow and wind and comes with a hood, ventilation zips, and pockets so you can store your phone and ski pass. 

Ski pants

A quality pair of ski pants or trousers will keep you warm and toasty on open chairlifts as well as on the slopes, and as they are adjustable, you can wear layers underneath them if required. 

Mid-layer

Choose a mid-layer that is zippable, such as a fleece hoodie, rather than something that you have to pull over your head to remove, such as a jumper or a hoodie. 

Base layer

To manage the moisture that you’ll inevitably generate when skiing, a thin base layer that is breathable and has a close fit will improve thermal efficiency.

What ski clothing outfit should I wear for skiing?

As long as you have the essentials for skiing, you should be able to stay warm and dry for the entire ski session. Start with a thin base layer to wick away the moisture, and a warm midlayer such as a women’s or men’s sherpa fleece that can be removed with an easy zip if you need to cool off. Finish the look off with a waterproof ski jacket and pants, and you can add optional accessories such as a beanie and gloves. You should choose a colour and style that suits you if you intend to wear it all day in and around the resort. 

Can I wear normal clothes to ski in?

Regular clothes are not okay to ski in, as even though they might appear warm, if they are not waterproof, just one fall in the snow and you’ll be soaking wet and cold. This is true for puffer jackets too as they look bulky and insulated, but if they aren’t waterproof, the insulation will get wet and reduce its effectiveness. Remember that there is also the wind chill factor to consider when skiing, and normal cotton fabrics will not block out the wind as effectively as a ski jacket and pants will. 

How should I carry my phone while skiing?

The last thing you want when skiing is to lose your phone somewhere on the piste, as it can be covered in snow in minutes and lost forever. This is why ski jackets and pants have zippable pockets on both the inside and outside to keep your phone safe. It’s better to keep it in the inside pocket close to your body, as cold weather can drain a battery quickly. You shouldn’t put your phone in a loose pocket when skiing, or in your lift pass pocket on the sleeve, as it can get damaged easily. 

Do I need lots of layers when skiing?

Layers are ideal for skiing because even though you might need full protection when skiing, if you stop at a ski resort restaurant halfway down the slope for a drink or something to eat, you won’t want to do so in a full ski jacket. Having midlayers helps you cool off easily, and you can unzip and zip your midlayer and ski jacket when you need to prevent overheating. 

Should I wear a hat when skiing?

Some skiers prefer to buy a warm hooded ski jacket that they can toggle closed, whereas others prefer to leave the hood down or even detach it completely in favour of a beanie. Consider whether you’ll be wearing a helmet too, as you might want to exchange a hood or beanie for a thin, breathable balaclava. A beanie will cover your ears better and prevent wind chill, and you can even choose a headband to leave part of your head exposed and stop overheating.
