What is a windbreaker?
If you’re considering buying a new jacket for protection from the elements, then you’re spoiled for choice thanks to Columbia’s wide selection of waterproof, water-repellent, and windproof jackets. A windbreaker is a jacket worn as an outer layer, often made from a nylon fabric that is versatile, breathable, and offers great protection from windy conditions. They are not always waterproof, but can repel light rain to keep you comfortable outdoors when temperatures drop. If you’re hiking in conditions that are cool and dry, then a windbreaker is ideal as it gives lightweight protection as an outer layer jacket from blustery weather that can often make you feel colder than it really is.
Features to look for in a windbreaker
We’ve already established what a windbreaker is, but what features should your windbreaker have to keep you protected on your outdoor adventure? Let’s take a look at what to look for when buying a windbreaker:
Materials
A nylon shell offers great protection from wind, as when you’re buffeted from all sides, the air cannot penetrate it easily, keeping you warm and the windchill factor down.
Adjustability
Windbreakers benefit from adjustable elements like drawcords to help you stay out of the wind and rain, as well as elasticated cuffs to stop wind blowing up them.
Zippered pockets
Every aspect of the windbreaker is designed to prevent wind from blowing on you, so pockets that zip up allow easy access but high protection.
Weight
A windbreaker is designed to be lightweight and easy to pack into your backpack, so it can be pulled out and put on in a flash if the wind picks up.
Water repellent
Windbreakers aren’t waterproof, but many have water-repellent technology that stops rain from soaking through too quickly and making you wet.
Stain repellent
With our patented Omni-Shield™ technology stains are prevented so you don’t have to worry about sitting down for lunch, or walking a muddy trail.
Sun protection
If you’re only going to be wearing a windbreaker on top of a t-shirt, then look for Omni-Shade™ innovation which will protect you from UVA and UVB rays.
A good windbreaker will be a breathable outer layer that is lightweight and provides at least some protection from the rain. The difference between a rain jacket and a windbreaker is that it is designed to stop air from getting to your body, whereas a rain coat stops rain completely.
When do you need a windbreaker?
Whether you’re headed out on a hike, planning on running or cycling, or just commuting to and from work, a windbreaker is an excellent addition as a top layer. As a windbreaker is not a fully waterproof jacket, if the weather is forecast to bring rain then it’s not going to offer the protection you need. However, if it’s a mild day with a breeze, then a windbreaker is going to take the edge off to prevent you from feeling cold and uncomfortable. It’s not made from a heavy material so it’s easy to slip on and off, and you won’t notice you’re wearing it as with a bulky puffer jacket. It’s also the perfect item of clothing if you’re going to be standing around in windy conditions, such as spectating sports, as it provides a suitable barrier. We recommend having a windbreaker on hand for spring and autumn walks on the trail when the weather is bright but there is not much heat to make you sweat.
How to layer a windbreaker
Columbia has windbreakers for men and women, as they are one of the best ways to adapt quickly to changing temperatures. All of our windbreakers are lightweight and packable, so you can switch up your layers with minimal efforts. Always start with a comfy base layer such as a t-shirt or polo shirt which can wick away any moisture and keep you from feeling chilly. You can add a windbreaker directly over this for a light and flexible solution, especially if you have a long-sleeve t-shirt on already. When you also need to stay warm as well as protected from the wind, we recommend a mid layer such as a fleece or a thin puffer jacket. This gives you the benefit of insulating your body heat as well as preventing it from being removed quickly by the wind getting inside your jacket.
